World Poetry – World Stories at Victoria Asian Heritage Celebration

Program

Date:  June 4th, 2017
Time:  2pm-4pm
Place: Room C116, David Strong Building, University of Victoria

Length of presentation: 7-8 minutes for each participant
Format:  After all the presentations are completed, there will be a question and answer period.
Participants:  Ten participants representing Chilean, Chinese, Indian, Japanese, Jewish, Korean, Sri Lankan and Thai cultural groups.
Refreshments: juice and cookies will be served.

Some of the participants will recite poetry of their own creation or someone well-known within their culture. Some will tell/read stories or present thoughts written by someone from their culture.  The spoken words that are presented first in non-English will be followed by an English translation.
We are pleased to put this program together.  This offers an opportunity for the audience to listen to the spoken arts, both in the original language and also in English.  This creates an occasion to hear a spoken subject matter derived from various cultures.  We hope that hearing different languages will widen our curiosity both for the sound and the intonation of spoken words not familiar to us and therefore stimulate our interest to learn them.  In addition, we also hope that knowing the context of spoken words and the style of poetry will enrich our understanding of diverse cultures.
This is an opportunity for the participants to present their own creations or share their culture and language with the rest of the participants and audience.  This is the time when people from different cultures/countries experience the richness of diversity within the Canadian mosaic while they share their lives as an integral part of Canada through learning from one another.
