Mission Statement:

Victoria Asian Heritage Celebration Committee is a group of organizations coming together to celebrate Asian Heritage Month during the month of May throughout the Greater Victoria area.  Various forms of arts and cultural activities/performances will be organized and presented in order to celebrate the richness, beauty and wisdom of Asian cultures.

The Government of Canada recognizes the month of May as Asian Canadian Heritage MonthFor the last several years a committee was set up to organize the Asian Heritage Month Celebration on the grounds of the University of Victoria.  We have been working in partnership with the Aga Khan Foundation’s World Partnership Walk so that events take place on the last Sunday of May.  We receive support from the University of Victoria for the use of facilities.

The purpose of the Celebration is multi-fold:
  • To strengthen identity among Asian Canadians by celebrating and sharing their traditional Asian cultures
  • To build awareness of both diversity and uniqueness within Asian cultures
  • To promote awareness and understanding of Asian Canadian identities within the fabric of Canada’s multicultural society
  • To showcase various forms of arts of traditional Asian cultures
  • To  communicate Asian Canadian communities’ contributions and commitment to enriching the Canadian society
  • To enhance community building among Asian Canadian communities and further between Asian Canadian communities and the public at large.
We plan to organize the following programs during the month of May:
  • A stage program of dance and music of Asian cultural groups
  • Family activities where the public can participate in traditional Asian cultural activities such as origami, calligraphy, games, jewelry-making, costume-dressing  and henna painting, etc. They are elated to traditional culture and games with audience participation
  • A spoken arts presentation of poetry/play/stories
  • A visual arts exhibition of paintings/ceramics/photographs
  •  Cultural displays and demonstrations such as ethnic clothes, martial arts, flower arrangement and the Way of Tea
  •  A historical material display of Asian Canadians’ experience in Canada such as historical photos and objects
  • A lecture and discussion related to the history of Asian Canadians
